Arsenal continue the trend to play well after going out of the Champions League and easily won against Everton in the EPL. This means last week’s pick was won with ease, despite Clattenburg’s best effort to ruin the game by not giving a clear penalty against Sanchez and weirdly ruling out a perfectly good goal by Giroud. It was a terrible performance by the referee and this would’ve been a huge issue on another week.
This Week’s Pick: Arsenal to Win the League
There was no action in the English Premier League this weekend and I don’t really like international friendlies which is why we didn’t make a pick this weekend. They are way too unpredictable for my taste for all sorts of reasons. This why I decided to try something different and place a bet on Arsenal winning the English Premier League.
I will start by saying that the idea here is not to wait till the end of the season, but actually wait for the price for them to drop and trade out with a decent profit. There are a number of reasons to believe the Gunners will move closer to the leaders in the next few weeks:
Next Three Games
If you look at the schedule, both Tottenham and Leicester face difficult games. Spurs will have to visit Stoke and Liverpool while hosting Man United in between. The league leaders play with Southampton and West Ham at home and Sunderland away. I expect both teams to drop some points, especially Tottenham.
Arsenal, in the meantime, will host Watford and Crystal Palace at home as well as West Ham away. On top of that, they will play their game in hand against West Brom at home shortly after. It’s a good opportunity to close the gap and the London Derby against West Ham looks like the only tough game in that period.
Of course, Arsenal will have to improve their performance on the pitch if they are to have a try at the title. There are reasons to believe this could happen, in my opinion, and we’ve seen it against Barcelona and Everton.
Elneny seems like the missing link in the middle of the pitch. He runs a lot and keeps the ball moving well which gives more freedom in the final third for the likes of Ozil and Sanchez. The latter is looking much better recently, after a bad season so far. If you add Welbeck and Iwobi, it seems Wenger finally found a team that is functioning well despite the injuries the Gunners carry.
It is important to note that there are no other competitions between now and the end of the season. Arsenal’s squad might have had issues to cope with three tournaments, but it is more than capable of keeping it up in the EPL only.
I think it might be too late for Arsenal to win the league. There are just not enough games left. However, the Gunners have every chance of closing the gap in the next three weeks and I believe they will make a final push. I expect the price for them, which is 7 right now, to drop significantly at some point soon. That’s when I would probably close my bet.
